If you could save a child’s sight with the press of a button, wouldn’t you?

That’s the idea behind Lions KidSight USA, a new national initiative announced by Lions in the United States. Lions KidSight USA was launched to help ensure that children between the ages of six months and six years receive vision screening and professional follow-up care when needed.

According to educational experts, 80% of learning is visual. So if a child can’t see well, he can’t learn well. Yet most young children don’t get their vision screened until they have problems learning or paying attention in school. By then, it may already be too late. Unless vision problems are detected early and corrected, they risk becoming permanent by age 7.

Lions in the USA already screen more than 500,000 kids per year through state-wide and local programs often known as “KidSight.” Lions KidSight USA is a national coalition that brings together Lions programs that screen kids from 6 months to 6 years of age in order create a coordinated national program.

Lions KidSight USA in Connecticut is supported by the Connecticut Lions Eye Research Foundation, the Lions of Connecticut, and all three of our Lions Districts.

Lions KidSight USA wants to reach kids early because some vision problems can become permanent by age seven. But vision issues can be easily detected with hand-held screening devices that even generate the results on-site. Vision problems detected before the age of 7 years can often be corrected, offering every child the chance of clear sight.

Pediatric Eye Screening Program
The Connecticut Lions Eye Research Foundation through its Lions Eye Health Program (LEHP) has expanded its program of free eye screening to include all young children. Through this program LEHP takes eye screenings to pre-school children throughout Connecticut. The program is aimed at children enrolled in Head Start programs, private nursery schools and other public, pre-school programs that do not have access to paediatric eye screening programs; it can also be used at other venues where young children under adult supervision meet. (Fairs/Events aimed at children) our primary aim is children aged 6 months to 7 years during which time corrective measure have a greater prognosis.

The program is based on the use of the WelchAllyn SPOT VS100 Screening Equipment. (as easy to use as a camera). The screening equipment allows screening for such eye abnormalities as:

Astigmatism: irregularly shaped corneas or lenses

Myopia: nearsightedness

Hyperopia: farsightedness

Strabismus: Misalignment of the eyes

Anisometropia: unequal refractive power

Anisocoria: pupil size anomalies
